We all have studied 3 Enterprise Architecture Frameworks/methodologies in good detail. Here is a nice article that compare our three frame works : TOGAF , FEA and Zachman along with a Gartner framework. In fact, he is the author of Simple Architectures of Complex Enterprises.
He pretty much starts out by highlighting the same points that we have studied - challenges, limitations and present day context. He motivates the topic with some interesting facts and figures. He highlights the fact that no-one has spent more money on developing enterprise architecture more than the federal government. He discusses the emergence of Gartner as a premier meta group with a sound Enterprise architecture practice port 2005. He lays out all the important events in the field of enterprise architecture from 1987 to present. he goes on to discuss frameoworks with case studies and finally concludes with recommendations of organizations.
